POSTED: 6/17/2026

Overview

Project Type: Custom Mobile Lifting Assembly Platform
Client: Xuzhou XCMG Mining Machinery Co., Ltd. (Global leader in ultra‑large mining excavators)
Industry: Heavy Machinery Manufacturing
Core Functions: Lifting (≥1,000mm) + Longitudinal Travel (8m) + Lateral Extension (5,000 → 7,000mm)
Key Parameters: 500kg capacity, Siemens PLC control, Schneider components, multiple safety redundancies

XCMG Mining Machinery is a global leader in ultra‑large mining excavators. On its production lines, critical structural components such as booms weighing several tons require assembly, welding and inspection. Traditional solutions—fixed scaffolding or basic lifting tables—offer limited flexibility, low efficiency, and increased safety risks for personnel working at height around large, complex structures.

The client required a customised, mobile, and intelligent elevated work platform capable of moving along fixed rails between multiple workstations and adjusting its working width to suit different boom lengths.

Challenge

  • Multi‑motion coordination: Vertical lift, rail travel, and deck extension must operate independently with full interlock.
  • Personnel safety: Redundant hydraulic and electrical safeguards, plus full‑height guarding, are mandatory for overhead work.
  • Workstation accuracy: Precise rail positioning and adjustable working width are needed for varying boom lengths.
  • Industrial durability: All structural and hydraulic components must withstand continuous heavy use with high safety factors.

Solutions

We engineered an integrated “Lift, Move, and Extend” system, controlled by a centralised Siemens PLC:

Triple‑Axis Functionality

  • Lifting: Scissor mechanism, 500kg capacity, travel ≥1,000mm, speed 2‑3 m/min.
  • Travel: Motor‑driven with brakes, precise movement along an 8‑metre ground rail.
  • Extension: Two motorised telescopic decks expand the platform width from 5m to 7m on demand.

Safety Architecture

  • Hydraulic safety valves, burst valves, and emergency manual descent.
  • Full‑perimeter 1.1m‑high guardrails with continuous tie‑off points.
  • Mechanical and electrical dual interlocks to prevent unsafe operation.
  • Overload protection + emergency stop.

Ergonomic & Adaptive Design

  • Integrated access steps for safe operator entry/exit.
  • Schneider Electric components for reliable long‑term operation.
  • 4mm chequer plate deck on a 16# channel steel frame – robust and durable.

Workflow

Step 1 – Positioning
The platform travels along the ground rail to the target workstation, automatically aligning with the production line cycle – positioning accuracy ±5mm.

Step 2 – Setup
The operator steps onto the platform, activates the telescopic function with one button, extending the deck from 5m to 7m to match the current boom length. The guardrails expand simultaneously with the deck – no need to leave the platform.

Step 3 – Operation
Using the pendant or remote control, the operator precisely adjusts the platform height (speed 2‑3 m/min adjustable) to the most comfortable working level. During assembly, welding or inspection, hydraulic burst valves, load‑limiting valves, and full‑perimeter guardrails provide multi‑layer safety protection.

Step 4 – Transfer
After completing work at one station, the platform retracts its extension, lowers to the travel position, and moves along the rail to the next station – entering the next cycle. A single platform covers multiple workstations, delivering high return on investment.

FAQ

Forklifts and scaffolding are the traditional approach, but they come with three major drawbacks: workers must constantly climb up and down when boom lengths change; forklifts can‘t extend sideways, so workers can’t reach far welding points;

and there is no systematic fall protection for working at height. This platform integrates lifting, traversing, and telescoping into one unit. Once the operator steps on, height, position, and working width are all adjustable – no need to climb up and down, no scaffolding rework, and full coverage of the entire boom assembly in one go.

The extension mechanism uses motor‑driven rails with precision guides. The deck frame is 16# channel steel + 4mm chequer plate – rigid enough.

The extension sections connect to the main platform via heavy‑duty slide rails, eliminating cantilever wobble when fully extended. Additionally, extension, lifting, and traversing are electrically interlocked – while extending, lift and travel are automatically locked to prevent centre‑of‑gravity shifts caused by misoperation.

The traversing system uses motor drive + brakes. The rail is pre‑fitted with positioning points at each workstation, using proximity switches or mechanical stops.

Each time the platform arrives, the brakes engage automatically – repeat positioning accuracy ±5mm. The operator doesn‘t need to reposition repeatedly; once it stops, work can start immediately.

The safety system covers both active prevention and passive protection:

Door/position interlocks – lift and travel cannot start unless the guardrail door is closed and the platform is correctly positioned.

Hydraulic burst valves – lock immediately if a hose ruptures, preventing sudden descent.

Emergency manual descent valve – even with total hydraulic failure, the platform can be lowered slowly by hand.

Load‑limiting valve – prevents lifting if overloaded, stopping unsafe operation at the source.

Full‑perimeter 1.1m guardrails with continuous tie‑off points – harness lanyards can be attached anywhere, leaving no safety gaps.
