Automotive Metrology Lift & Rotate Platform

POSTED: 6/4/2026

Overview

Project type: Integrated lifting and rotating platform for precision measurement
Typical clients: Automotive OEMs, third-party testing labs, metrology service providers
Industry: Automotive manufacturing (body-in-white, chassis, component dimensional control)
Key functions: 900mm lift + 360° rotation with 15° indexed locking
Key features: Machined unpainted table surface, pit-flush mounting, detachable rotation module, wireless remote control

Client Background & Industry Pain Point

During automotive R&D and production, dimensional accuracy inspection of bodies-in-white, chassis assemblies and components is the “last mile” of quality control. Traditional measurement workflows involve three separate steps: placing the workpiece onto a measurement platform using a crane or forklift; lifting it with a fixed lift to access underbody features; and finally rotating the workpiece via a manual turntable or separate rotating stand to capture full 3D data. This process has three critical pain points:

  1. Poor repeatability: Manual angle adjustment cannot be precisely reset, leading to scattered measurement results for the same part.
  2. Interference from measurement surface: Painted, uneven or reflective surfaces create noise in laser scan data.
  3. Difficult maintenance: When an integrated rotating unit fails, the entire equipment must be disassembled, causing long production line downtime.

Furthermore, measurement pits require the equipment to be flush with the floor when not in use to avoid tripping or blocking material flow. Traditional equipment often fails to meet all requirements (lifting, rotating, flush mounting, high precision) within a compact space.

Core Design Concept

The lifting system (dual hydraulic cylinders, linear guide rails, bellows covers) and the rotation system (motor-driven reducer, 15° indexed locking) are integrated into a single frame. The whole unit is installed in a measurement pit and becomes flush with the floor when fully lowered. The rotation module is bolted and detachable, with four dedicated lifting lugs – it can be lifted out for repair without affecting the lifting body.

Features

  • Precision indexing: 15° mechanical locking ensures the same angular position every time. Repeatability reaches ±0.05°, satisfying the rigorous pose consistency required by CMM and laser scanners.
  • Machined table surface: Non-painted, flat and uniformly diffusive – reduces scan noise by approximately 40% and improves 3D model quality.
  • Modular maintenance: The rotation unit is bolted to the base and has dedicated lifting lugs. If the drive or reducer fails, the whole module can be replaced within 2 hours without dismantling the entire equipment. Repair downtime is reduced by 80%.
  • Compact pit integration: All moving parts and cables are kept within the platform footprint (990×1600 mm). The pit only requires an opening slightly larger than this, simplifying civil work.
